The CMS Organizational Structure

Now that you have learned about the history of CMS, it is important to understand how the Agency is organized today.

CMS is one of many agencies within DHHS. It has a Central Office and 10 regional offices. The Central Office is made up of a number of components (i.e., Office or Center). The three that perform activities (e.g., interact with clients and partners) directly related to CMS health care programs are the:

The 10 regional offices are located across the United States. Their responsibilities include:

  • Providing assistance and day-to-day education to CMS beneficiaries and their caregivers
  • Ensuring that the Agency’s programs are carried out effectively and efficiently
  • Managing the implementation of CMS programs by carriers, intermediaries, state agencies, managed care plans, health care providers, and suppliers
