Hospital Stays

Photo Joleen and Todd begin by examining the Medicare Part A coverage for hospital stays. The covered services for inpatient care include:
  • A semiprivate room
  • Meals
  • General nursing
  • Other hospital services and supplies

This includes care in critical access hospitals (small facilities that give limited services to people in rural areas). Inpatient mental health care in an independent psychiatric facility is also covered under hospital stays. However, this coverage is limited to 190 days in a lifetime.

The coverage for hospital stays does not include private duty nursing or a television or telephone in the room. It also does not include a private room, unless medically necessary.

Now that they have an understanding of the covered services for hospital stays, Joleen and Todd are ready to examine the costs.
