Home Health Care

Todd is relieved to find that Medicare Part A helps cover the equipment needed to support their father's home health care.

Coverage

Once a person with Medicare qualifies for home health care, Medicare helps cover:

  • Part-time skilled nursing care
  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Speech/language therapy
  • Part-time home health aide services
  • Durable medical equipment (e.g., wheelchairs, hospital beds, oxygen, and walkers)
  • Certain medical supplies
  • Medical social services

Payment

If a person qualifies, most home health care is fully covered by Medicare for each 60 days of care that is needed. This 60-day period is called an episode of care. The payment for episodes of care is based on the period of health care an average person in the same situation would need.

The person pays:

  • Nothing for home health care services provided by a Medicare-approved home health agency
  • 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for covered durable medical equipment
