Veteran and Military Retiree Benefits

graphicWhen Doris asks Samuel if he was in the military, he tells her that he served 4 years in the Army during World War II. Based on his response, Doris shares the following information with Samuel:

Basic Information

Veterans

If you are a veteran, you can call the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at 1-800-827-1000 for information about veterans' benefits and services available in your area.

Military Retirees

TRICARE for Life (TFL) is a new way for military retirees to receive health care benefits. It provides expanded medical coverage for:

  • Medicare-eligible retirees, including retired guard members and reservists
  • Medicare-eligible family members and widows/widowers
  • Certain former spouses if they were eligible for TRICARE before age 65

Those who are eligible get all the Original Medicare Plan benefits, plus all the TFL benefits. Medicare will be the first payer for all Medicare-covered services, and TFL will be the second payer. TFL will pay all Medicare copayments and deductibles and cover most of the costs of certain care not covered by Medicare. For more information on military retiree benefits, call 1-888-DOD-LIFE or visit www.tricare.osd.mil/ndaa or www.tricare.osd.mil/tfl/tflcostmatrix_b.html.

Important Tip

You must be enrolled in Medicare Part B to be eligible for TFL.
