Introduction

Welcome to the Rights and Protections Under Medicare lesson.

Medicare beneficiaries have certain guaranteed rights whether they are in the Original Medicare Plan, a Medicare managed care plan, or a Private Fee-for-Service plan. These rights:

  • Protect beneficiaries when they receive health care
  • Ensure that beneficiaries receive the health care services provided by law
  • Protect beneficiaries against unethical practices

This lesson provides an overview of the basic rights and protections beneficiaries have under Medicare.
After completing this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Identify the basic rights and protections beneficiaries have under Medicare
  • Describe the patient privacy rule
  • Understand appeal rights in the Original Medicare Plan, managed care plans, and Private Fee-for-Service plans
