The agent responds to Sondra's question with the following information.

Three Medigap plans offer a prescription drug benefit.

Plans H and I offer a basic prescription drug benefit that covers half the costs of prescription drugs after the deductible has been satisfied. In 2003, the plans will pay up to a maximum of $1,250 per year after the $250 deductible has been satisfied. In order to receive the maximum benefits from the policy, you should have at least $2,750 per year, or about $250 per month, in prescription drug costs.

Plan J offers an extended prescription drug benefit that covers half the costs of prescription drugs after the deductible has been satisfied. In 2003, the plan will pay up to a maximum of $3,000 per year after the $250 deductible has been satisfied. In order to receive the maximum benefits from the policy, you should have at least $6,250 per year, or about $500 per month, in prescription drug costs.

The agent reminds Sondra and Marvin that the plan they choose will impact the cost of their Medigap policy and suggests they take a look at some other factors that determine the cost.
