Health Plan Options

PhotoJim asks if he will have choices about health plans after he enrolls in Medicare.

Marjorie explains that you cannot join a Medicare + Choice plan when you are entitled to Medicare based on ESRD. You are limited to the Original Medicare Plan except in the following situations:

  • If you are currently enrolled in a non-Medicare health plan that participates in the Medicare Program, you may be able to join a Medicare + Choice plan offered by the same organization that offers your non-Medicare health plan.
  • If you are already entitled to Medicare based on disability or age and have chosen a Medicare + Choice plan, you can stay in the plan or join another plan offered by the same organization.
  • If you are enrolled in a Medicare + Choice plan, you may join another Medicare + Choice plan when your plan terminates or reduces its service area.
  • If you have a kidney transplant, you may be able to enroll in a Medicare + Choice plan.
