Medicare is a Federal health insurance program.
The Medicare Program was established by Congress in 1965. The Centers
for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is the Federal agency that
operates Medicare. CMS is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services (DHHS). The Social Security Administration (SSA) is responsible
for enrolling people in Medicare.
