Introduction to Medicare

Medicare is health insurance for people:

  • Age 65 or older
  • Under age 65 with certain disabilities, and
  • Any age with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) (i.e., permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant).

Medicare includes the following:

  • Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)
  • Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)
  • The Original Medicare Plan
  • Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans) (e.g., HMO or PPO Plans)
  • Medicare Part D (Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage)

Let’s take a closer look at each of these. We’ll discuss how enrollment works, the type of coverage provided, and the cost to people with Medicare.
