Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage

Coverage

While prescription drug coverage is available to everyone with Medicare, enrollment is not automatic. To receive coverage, people must choose and join a plan.

PhotoMedicare prescription drug coverage may be provided in the following ways:

  • Plans offered by private companies approved by Medicare. These plans add coverage to the Original Medicare Plan and some Medicare Cost Plans and Medicare Private Fee-For-Service Plans.
  • Part of a Medicare Advantage Plan or other Medicare Plan that offers prescription drug coverage.
  • Part of an employer/union group plan offered to retirees.

People who have other drug coverage that is at least as good as standard Medicare prescription drug coverage, called creditable coverage, may keep that coverage or they may choose to enroll in a Medicare drug plan.
