Summary of Key Points

The CSR at 1-800-MEDICARE covered the following points during her conversation with Malia:

  • SSA determines if a person is disabled
  • A person is automatically entitled to Medicare Part A and enrolled in Part B after she receives SSA cash benefits for 24 months, and she will receive her Medicare card in the mail
  • Disabled Railroad employees and Federal Government employees may also be eligible for Medicare
  • All Medicare health plan choices are available to a person who qualifies for Medicare based on a disability
  • Coverage will terminate if SSA determines that a person is no longer disabled
  • When a person turns 65, her entitlement to Medicare will be based on age rather than disability
  • Federal law does not require insurance companies to sell Medigap policies to persons under age 65
