During the telephone conversation, Marjorie covered the following points related to Medicare coverage for people with ESRD:

  • If you have ESRD, you qualify for Medicare regardless of age if you require regular dialysis or a kidney transplant and meet certain SSA or RRB requirements
  • Medicare provides special coverage if you require dialysis or a kidney transplant
  • If you are covered by a GHP, Medicare is the secondary payer for the first 30 months
  • Your health plan options are limited to the Original Medicare Plan except under certain conditions
  • You are eligible for all services covered by Part A and Part B of the Original Medicare Plan
  • Your Medicare coverage can begin at different times, depending on your circumstances
  • If ESRD is the only reason you are entitled to Medicare, your coverage will end 12 months after the month dialysis ends or 36 months after the month of a kidney transplant
