From its inception, Social Security's primary purpose has been to keep retired workers and their families out of poverty. Social Security benefits—together with private savings and investments, and employer-provided pensions—are the three sources of income for retired (and disabled) workers and their families.

Some people may experience reductions in their Social Security benefits, based on who they work(ed) for and whether their employer withheld Social Security taxes.
