When Work Affects Social Security Benefits

If someone is receiving Social Security retirement or survivor benefits and still working, he or she can earn money while still receiving benefits. However, depending on that person's age, benefits will be reduced if earnings exceed certain limits.

As of January 1, 2000, reduction to Social Security benefits due to earnings only applies to individuals who have not reached their full retirement age.

When people reach their full retirement age, any money they earn while working does not affect their benefits.
