How an individual applies for survivor benefits depends on whether that person is already getting other Social Security benefits. If application is necessary, it can be done by telephone or at any Social Security Administration (SSA) office.

Certain information is needed to process an application. SSA will need either original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency. Even if information is missing, it is wise not to delay in applying, as benefits to be paid may start accruing from the date of initial application.
