Possible Reductions to Social Security Benefits

There are no military service-specific reductions to Social Security benefits. Generally, individuals can get full Social Security benefits based on their earnings records, and can also receive military retirement if eligible.

However, Social Security benefits may be reduced by the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) if the individual also receives a government pension for work not covered by Social Security.

For more information about this reduction, see the online Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) lesson.
