One Possible Reduction: The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP)

The Windfall Elimination Provision affects how a person's retirement or disability benefit is figured if that person receives a pension from work not covered by Social Security. The formula used to figure that person's benefit amount is modified, and the result may be a lower Social Security benefit.

This modified formula prevents a windfall to people who would unfairly benefit from provisions aimed at assisting low-income workers.

Remember, Social Security's first and foremost mission is to keep retired workers and their families out of poverty.
