When WEP Begins

PreviousNext
A woman in her seventies.

A reduction for WEP begins with the first month that an individual receives both a Social Security benefit and a pension from the employer who did not withhold Social Security.

Example: Mary has been receiving Social Security benefits since she turned 70 years old, for work in the private sector. Next month, Mary will retire from her Federal position and start receiving her CSRS annuity. At this time, Mary's Social Security benefits may be reduced due to the WEP, depending on the amount she has earned and the number of years she has contributed to Social Security.
