Meet the Does: John Doe collects a Social Security benefit of $600 per month. His wife Jane is potentially eligible for a spouse benefit of up to 50% of John's, or $300. However, Jane also worked and paid into Social Security, qualifying for her own retirement benefit of $400.
By law, Jane can only receive the higher of the two benefits she is eligible for, not both. She will not receive a spouse benefit because her $400 retirement benefit is higher than the $300 spouse benefit from Social Security.
