There is much more to Social Security than simply retirement. The program was established with a core mission: to keep older American workers out of poverty. In accomplishing that mission, the program provides various benefits to workers and their dependent family members if they die or become disabled.

When eligible workers reach their full retirement age or age 62 if they elect to retire earlier, they can start receiving their monthly Social Security benefit.
