If an individual is eligible for Social Security retirement or disability benefits, or if an individual dies, then that person's children might also be eligible for benefits if the children are:

  • Unmarried and under age 18.
  • Age 18 - 19 and still in high school.
  • 18 or older, and disabled before age 22.

A one-time payment of $255 goes to the surviving spouse first, then to any eligible minor child or children, if their other parent who is eligible for Social Security dies.
